RESUMO

After T5 (forging + aging) and different T6 (forging + solution + aging) heat treatments, the AZ80A Mg alloys exhibited microstructures with different fractions of continuous precipitate (CP) regions and discontinuous precipitate (DP) regions. The effects of the fractions of DP regions and CP regions on the tensile properties and fracture behaviors were investigated using microstructural characterizations and analysis. The results showed that increasing the fraction of DP regions enhanced the yield strength and tensile strength at room temperature. However, at the same high temperature, increasing the fractions of DP regions improved the elongation but deteriorated the tensile strength significantly. The different resultant tensile properties at different temperatures were caused by the different precipitation-strengthening effects in the CP and DP regions. The strengthening contribution of the DP regions was more effective at room temperature but became inferior to the effect brought about by the CP regions at high temperatures. Micro-cracks were usually initiated and propagated in the CP regions at room temperature. At high temperatures, however, micro-voids formed more easily in the DP regions, and the fracture path preferred to locate there.

RESUMO

In November 2022, the Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Hypertension in China were updated; the definition of hypertension and the target of treatment was changed from 140/90 mm Hg to 130/80 mm Hg. This was prompted by the results of the Strategy of Blood Pressure Intervention in the Elderly Hypertensive Patients (STEP) study, a large multicenter randomized controlled trial conducted in China. STEP echoed the results of the American Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT), and confirmed that intense lowering of blood pressure is on the whole beneficial. This confirmation is important for the Chinese population, in which strokes outnumber myocardial infarctions. It is also reassuring to know that treating adults aged 60 years or older to achieve a systolic blood pressure of <130 mm Hg is safe, while reducing cardiovascular events, stroke and all-cause mortality. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to delineate the risks and benefits in subgroups, such as the elderly with diabetes or a history of stroke.

RESUMO

Background: Systemic arterial hypertension (HTN) is one of the common comorbidities among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study aimed to investigate the association between HTN and COPD. Methods: A total of 46,804 eligible non-pregnant participants aged ≥ 20 years examined in the Mobile Examination Center of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2018 were included in this cross-sectional study. Participants with invalid data on covariates, HTN, and COPD were excluded. The association between HTN and COPD was studied using logistic regression upon adjusting the potential covariates. Results: Among the participants, 46.1% (95% confidence interval [CI], 45.3-46.9) had HTN, and 6.8% (95% CI, 6.4-7.2) had self-reported COPD. COPD was associated with HTN (OR [odds ratio]=1.18, 95% CI [1.05-1.31], P<0.01) after adjusting for demographics, socioeconomic factors, smoking, diabetes, body mass index, and medication use, including inhaled corticosteroids and methylxanthines. The association between HTN and COPD was significant among adults younger than 60 years (P<0.01). Stratified by smoking status, there was a significant association between HTN and COPD in current heavy smokers (1.25, 95% CI [1.01-1.58]; P=0.04). Conclusions: In this nationwide survey, COPD was associated with HTN. The association was more robust among adults younger than 60 years and current heavy smokers. Future prospective studies are needed to examine the relationship between HTN and COPD.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-18. METHODS: This study included 8183 eligible nonpregnant participants aged ≥20 years from the NHANES 2011-18. MetS was defined as the presence of at least three of the following components: central obesity, reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, elevated blood pressure, and elevated fasting blood glucose. The prevalence of MetS was estimated taking into account the complex sampling. The time trend was evaluated using logistic regression. RESULTS: The total prevalence of MetS increased from 37.6% [95% confidence interval (CI): 34.0%-41.4%] in 2011-12 to 41.8% (95% CI: 38.1%-45.7%) in 2017-18 (P for trend = .028). Among the MetS components, the prevalence of elevated glucose increased from 48.9% (95% CI: 45.7%-52.5%) in 2011-12 to 64.7% (95% CI: 61.4%-67.9%) in 2017-18 (P for trend <.001). The prevalence of MetS in participants with low educational attainment increased from 44.4% (95% CI: 38.8%-50.1%) in 2011-12 to 55.0% (95% CI: 50.8%-59.1%) in 2017-18 (P for trend = .01). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of MetS increased during 2011-18, notably in participants with low educational attainment. Lifestyle modification is needed to prevent MetS and the associated risks of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Key messages What is already known on this topic: Prevalence of metabolic syndrome is an index of the cardiometabolic health of a population. What this study adds: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in US adults increased during 2011-18, notably in participants with low educational attainment. How this study might affect research, practice, or policy: Lifestyle modification is needed to prevent metabolic syndrome and the associated risks of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has been proposed to be an unconventional risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. We investigated the association between HPV infection and cardiovascular diseases among women with or without HPV vaccination. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 9,353 women aged between 20 to 59 years old who were tested for vaginal HPV DNA in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2016. Cardiovascular diseases were defined as the presence of self-reported coronary heart diseases, heart attacks, angina pectoris, and stroke. The association between HPV and cardiovascular diseases was studied using logistic regression, with adjustment for the potential confounders. RESULTS: A total of 40.8% of women were HPV DNA positive; 3.0% had cardiovascular diseases; and 9.0% of women received the HPV vaccine. The presence of vaginal HPV infection was associated with cardiovascular diseases (odd ratio [OR] = 1.66, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.28-2.16), which remained significant (OR = 1.54, 95% CI 1.15-2.08) after adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors, medical history, family history of cardiovascular diseases, and antihypertensive drugs. The association was absent among those who were vaccinated against HPV (OR= 0.50, 95% CI 0.07-3.51) but present among those who were not (OR = 1.63, 95% CI 1.18-2.25). CONCLUSIONS: There was an association between HPV infection and cardiovascular diseases. This association was not significant among women vaccinated against HPV. The effect of HPV vaccination on cardiovascular diseases requires further investigation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Hypertension and arthritis are two common diseases in the general population, with multiple common risk factors. This study aimed to assess the association between hypertension (HTN) and arthritis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cohort study included 48,372 eligible non-pregnant participants aged ≥ 20 years who had valid data on hypertension and arthritis from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2018. The association between hypertension and arthritis was studied by logistic regression, adjusting for demographics, socioeconomic factors, excess sodium intake, physical activity, ever smoking, diabetes status and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: Among the participants, 48.0% (95% CI: 47.2-48.9) had hypertension and 24.5% (95% CI: 23.8-25.3) had self-reported arthritis. Hypertension was associated with arthritis [OR = 2.90, (95% CI: 2.74-3.07), p < 0.01], which remained significant [OR = 1.27, (95% CI:1.18-1.37), p < 0.01] after adjustments. Stratified by the types of arthritis, the association remained significant in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) [OR = 1.25, (95% CI: 1.11-1.41), p < 0.01] and osteoarthritis (OA) [OR = 1.32, (95% CI: 1.16-1.50); p < 0.01]. There was no clear association between hypertension and OA in participants aged 60 years old and above [OR = 1.08, (95% CI: 0.92-1.26); p = 0.37]. CONCLUSIONS: In this large nationally representative survey over 20 years, arthritis, including both RA and OA, was strongly associated with hypertension. Our study demonstrates a need for hypertension screening and blood control among patients with arthritis.Key MessagesArthritis was associated with hypertension. Both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are strongly associated with hypertension. There is an urgency for hypertension screening and blood control among patients with arthritis.

RESUMO

Introduction: Poor dental health is associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, the relationship between CVD and denture use is currently unknown. This study aimed to investigate whether denture use is associated with CVD among American adults. Methods: 10,246 non-pregnant subjects aged 30-59 years from five cycles (2009-2018) of the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included in this study. Participants who were observed by a dental examiner wearing denture/partial denture/plates were defined as denture users. CVD was defined as self-reported coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, stroke, and congestive heart failure. The association between denture use and CVD was analyzed using logistic regression with adjustment for potential cofounders. Results: 4.4% (95% CI, 3.9-5.0) participants had CVD, and 3.5% (95% CI, 2.8-4.5) participants were denture users. Denture use was associated with CVD [OR = 4.26, 95% CI (2.90-6.28), P < 0.01], which remained significant [adjusted OR = 1.82, 95% CI (1.15-2.88), P < 0.01] after adjustments for sociodemographic characteristics, smoking, alcohol use, drug addiction, body mass index (BMI), and abnormal medical conditions including gum problem, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Women with dentures had significantly higher odds of CVD [adjusted OR = 2.13, 95% CI (1.10-4.11), P = 0.025]. Conclusion: In this nationally representative survey, denture use was associated with CVD. Denture use may be an unconventional risk factor for assessing CVD risks, especially in women. Future studies are required to investigate whether CVD and denture use is causally related.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate the molecular mechanisms determining the coat color of native breed sheep in Xinjiang. METHODS: Bashibai sheep, Yemule white sheep and Tulufan black sheep were selected. Illumina HiSeq X Ten sequencing technology was used to detect the genes responsible for the white, light brown, black and cyan gray coat colors in sheep. Sequence analysis and functional gene annotation analysis were performed to analyze the results. The signal pathways and differentially expressed genes related to sheep hair color production regulation were screened and finally verified by real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Functional annotation by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis revealed significant differences in enrichment of immunity-related pathways as well as melanogenesis synthetic and tyrosine metabolism pathways. Our results showed that the DCT, TYR, TYRP1, PMEL, SLC45A2 and MLANA six genes may be associated with the regulation of coat color development and provide a theoretical basis for selecting natural coat colors of sheep.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recent clinical and experimental studies have confirmed the effects of Xinfuli Granule (XG), a compound Chinese medicine in the prevention and treatment of heart failure (HF). This study aimed to investigate the effects and the mechanisms of XG on ventricular reconstruction in rats with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to left anterior descending branch ligation. The rats that survived 24 h were randomly assigned to five groups: medium-dose of XG group (MI+XGM), high-dose of XG group (MI+XGH), carvedilol group (MI+C), medium-dose of XG + carvedilol group (MI+C+XGM). Fourteen rats underwent identical surgical procedures without artery ligation, serving as sham controls. At 28 days, left ventricular weight to body weight (LVW/BW) and heart weight to body weight (HW/BW) were calculated; left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular shortening fraction (LVFS), left ventricular internal diameter at systole (LVIDS) were measured by ultrasound; HE staining, Masson staining, and Sirius red staining were used to assess the myocardial pathological and physiological changes as well as myocardial fibrosis area and non-infarct zone I/III collagen ratio. Expression of Smad3 were detected and analyzed by Western blot, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. P-Smad3, Smad2 and Smad7 in the TGF-ß/Smads signaling pathway were also analyzed by Western blot. RESULTS: The LVIDS (P < 0.01), HW/BW (P < 0.05), type I/III collagen ratio (P < 0.01) and myocardial collagen (P < 0.01) decreased significantly while the LVW/BW, LVFS (P < 0.05) increased significantly in MI+XGM group as compared with those in other groups. The expression of key signal molecules of the TGF-ß/Smads signaling pathway, including Smad3, P-Smad3 and Smad2 protein were decreased, while the expression of Smad7 increased in both XG and carvedilol treatment groups as compared to those of the MI group (all P < 0.01). Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence further confirmed the down-regulated Smad3 expression. CONCLUSION: XG can improve ventricular reconstruction and inhibit myocardial fibrosis in rats with AMI by regulating TGF-ß/Smads signaling pathway.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Xinfuli Granule (XG), a compound Chinese herbal medicine, has been effectively used in China for the treatment of heart failure for more than fifty years. This study aimed to investigate the effects and the underlying mechanisms of Xinfuli in rats with doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with intraperitoneal injection of Doxorubicin (DOX, 2.5 mg/kg per week) for six weeks, and then randomly divided into four groups which received intragastrically administration of normal saline (control group) or different dosage of XG (0.675 g/kg per day, 1.35 g/kg per day, and 2.7g/kg per day, respectively) for six weeks. Transthoracic echocardiography was performed to evaluate the left ventricular fractional shortening (LVFS) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) before and after the XG treatment and histopathologic changes were also examined. Myocardial cell apoptosis was detected by TUNEL staining. The expression of related genes and proteins were analyzed using immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: Compared to those in the control group, rats in XG treated groups showed significantly improved cardiac function and milder cardiac histopathological changes, lower cardiomyocyte apoptosis index, higher expression of Bcl-2 and lower expression of Bax. CONCLUSIONS: Administration of XG improves cardiac function and histopathological changes in rats with doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. These effects are associated with inhibition of cardiomyocyte apoptosis, perhaps via regulation of Bcl-2 and Bax protein expression.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the bonding properties of three kinds of cements by observing the bonding inteffaces of cements and root canal dentin. METHODS: 15 extracted mandibular premolars were divided into 3 groups, and were cemented by Rely X luting, Panavia F and Paracore 5 mL, respectively. Each tooth was sectioned into two parts and the dentin-cement interfaces at the coronal, middle and apical parts of the fiber post were oberved by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The length of hybrid layer was also recorded. RESULTS: Hybrid layer was not clearly found in group one, which could be seen on the dentin-cement interfaces of group two and three. Resin tags and lateral adhesives were also observed in group three. From the apical to the coronal part, microgaps seemed gradually smaller in group one, while the hybrid layer became thicker in both group two and three. CONCLUSION: The total-etch resin cement bounds tightly with dentin, and owns a more superior bonding property than self-etch resin cement and resin modified glass ionomer cement.
